The use of a higher alloyed filler metal like 317L Plates can be necessary due to the cast structure of the weld metal.

The high temperature oxidation resistance of 317 Stainless Steel Coils is useful to 1500 Degree F. SS 317L Sheets is also used for heavy welded assemblies which cannot be annealed after welding or where the operating conditions cause exposure within the temperature range of 426.67 Degree F to 815.55 Degree F. SS 317L Plates is recommended for parts fabricated by welding which cannot be subsequently annealed or for parts which must operate in service of 800 Degree – 1600 Degree F.

These coils have a melting point of 1402 degree C (2555 degree F) and 35% elongation.
